Formatting the Running Head and Page numbers

Note: Student papers do not require a running head. However, if a course requests a running heading be included, steps for how to do this are provided below.

Step-by-step instructions for Microsoft Word
1. Open a new word document

2. On the first page (which will be your Title Page) format the header as follows:

Click:

  • Insert

  • Header

  • Edit header (at bottom of drop down box)

  • Tick ‘Different First Page’

  • Click ‘Page Number’
    - Click ‘Top of Page’
    - Click ‘Plain Number 3’ (to place page number in upper right corner)

  • Click ‘Close Header/Footer’

3. Go to your next page (which will be your Abstract) and format the header as follows:

  • Double click in the header section at the top of the page (this will open the header for formatting)

  • Click ‘Page Number’
    - Click ‘Top of Page’
    - Click ‘Plain Number 3’ (to place page number in upper right corner)

  • The page number that appears should be ‘2’

  • Click ‘Close Header/Footer’

4. You're done! Double check to make sure the results are correct.
